Zirconium is a chemical element and its symbol Zr atomic number is 40. It is a kind of high melting metal in light gray color. Corrosion resistance, soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia, high temperature, can react with non-metallic elements and many metallic elements to form a solid solution. Zirconium alloy a non-ferrous alloy consisting of zirconium as a matrix and the addition of other elements. The main alloying elements are tin, niobium, iron, etc. Zirconium alloy in 300 ~ 400℃ high temperature and high pressure water and steam has good corrosion resistance, moderate mechanical properties, low atomic thermal neutron absorption cross-section, has good compatibility to nuclear fuel, mostly used as the core structure material of water cooled nuclear reactor. In addition, zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance to a variety of acids, alkalis and salts, and has a strong affinity with oxygen, nitrogen and other gases, so zirconium alloys are also used in the manufacture of corrosion resistant parts and pharmaceutical machinery parts, in the electric vacuum and light bulb industry is widely used as a non-evetative degassing agent.
